Putting on a shirt doesn’t really change anything, but putting on an idea - that is a different story.

At the time of Columbus’ 1492 voyage, Spain’s national motto was “Ne Plus Ultra,” meaning “Nothing Further Beyond.” They believed they marked the edge of the world - nothing was beyond. When Columbus found the New World, this idea was dashed, however, instead of embarassment, Spain leaned into the idea and simply removed the “ne” to instead make their motto “More Beyond.” A declaration of the breaking of old boundaries and the beginning of new, unending discoveries. I read this story for the first time after my Dad died, and the author used it to embody the beautiful truth that in Jesus’ forgiveness and redemption, there is always More Beyond - more beyond pain, disappointments, heart-wounds, traumas, failures, and yes, even death itself.
